Girls Just Wanna Have Sun: The Ultimate Retro Summer Birthday Party (Rain or Shine!)
There's something so magical about a summer birthday party.
The bright colors. The popsicles. The sunshine. The excitement of running barefoot through the yard with your best friends. When my daughter told me she wanted a “spring/summer outdoor party” for her 6th birthday, I knew I wanted to create something that captured all of those carefree summer feelings.
The theme?
Girls Just Wanna Have Sun.
Inspired by retro summer colors, sunshine, popsicles, and Palm Springs vacation vibes, I dreamed up a celebration that felt playful, colorful, and full of personality. From themed activity stations to the sweetest little details, every part of the party was designed to make the girls feel like they had stepped into the happiest summer day.
Then...the forecast changed.
Four straight days of rain.
Temperatures in the 60s.
Not exactly pool party weather.
For about five minutes, I considered scrapping the entire theme and starting over.
But then Audrey looked at me and said, "I still want my spring/summer outdoor party."
So we kept the theme, embraced a little flexibility, and found a way to bring the sunshine inside.
And honestly? It turned out to be one of my favorite parties yet!
THE INSPIRATION BEHIND “GIRLS JUST WANNA HAVE SUN”
I wanted this party to feel less like a traditional pool party and more like a colorful retro summer dream.
Instead of bright primary colors, I chose a playful pastel palette that still felt sunny and vibrant.

The combination gave us all the summer energy while still feeling polished and cohesive.
From oversized balloons and beach balls to popsicle details and heart-shaped sunglasses, every element tied back to the same cheerful, nostalgic aesthetic.
THE DETAILS:
One of my favorite ways to design parties is by creating interactive experiences instead of simply decorating a space. Every station had its own playful name, making the entire party feel immersive from the moment guests arrived. And of course I designed all the signage and printable decor to match the invitation.
✨ Girls Just Wanna Shine
Our glam station quickly became one of the most popular spots.
The girls decorated themselves with:
Nail stickers
Glitter hair accessories
Jewelry
Scrunchies
Sunglasses
It was the perfect mix of activity and take-home favor.
✨ Girls Just Wanna Snack
No party is complete without snacks, so of course the snack station needed its own personality.
Filled with sweet treats, fresh fruit, lemonade, and colorful summer favorites, it became another fun focal point that fit seamlessly into the theme.
✨ Sunshine Strikes
Instead of ordinary lawn games, we created "Sunshine Strikes," our retro-inspired bowling station. And because we had to bring everything indoors, this game was still easily played by guests.
Giving simple activities fun names is one of the easiest ways to make a party feel customized without spending a fortune.

Guests decorated adorable popsicle-shaped cups that they used throughout the party.
It doubled as both an activity and a personalized keepsake.
WHEN THE WEATHER DOESN’T COOPERATE…

Instead of panicking, I reminded myself of something I tell my clients all the time:

How We Brought the Pool Party Indoors:
While we were lucky enough to still incorporate some outdoor fun, we moved many of our planned activities inside to stay flexible throughout the day.

The moment guests walked in, the bright balloons, cheerful signs, beach-inspired decor, and playful music immediately created the feeling of summer—even while it rained outside.
My Biggest Takeaway:
As parents (and especially as party planners), it's easy to get caught up chasing perfection.
But watching these girls laugh, dance, decorate cups, and snack together reminded me of something important:
Kids don't remember the forecast.
They remember how they felt.
